“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:1-2, ESV).
Let me begin this blog by asking you: What are your expectations for 2025? Do you have a plan for your spiritual life? Do you understand God’s vision for your life? Each year is a new opportunity and a fresh season for conquest. That is why I encourage you to determine in your heart to make this your best year yet.
If you’re unsure where to begin, I would like to share some tips to help you.
1. Commit to Bringing Light Into Your Life
God first brought order to creation by bringing light, the foundation for a successful new year.
Interestingly, if you continue reading this passage, you will notice that God created the sun, moon, and stars several days later. So, what light is this verse referring to? It points to Jesus Himself—He is the Light of the World.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life'” (John 8:12, ESV).
Notice what this passage says: If you follow Jesus, your new year will not walk in darkness. Following Jesus means dedicating the first hours of your morning to Him, engaging with the Word daily, and sharing the gospel message with those who need it.
2. Let Go of the Old
“And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so” (Genesis 1:7, ESV).
Some things cannot and should not coexist. God Himself created an expanse to separate them. Similarly, whenever we begin a new year, we must separate the old from our lives to make room for the latest.
This spiritual principle applies to all areas of life. For example, if old things in your home are no longer needed, let them go. Do not hold on to them just to “have something.” Most importantly, the “old self”—our old nature—must also be put aside.
This refers to our former way of life before knowing Jesus. Suppose you are holding onto bad habits, unhealthy friendships, struggling to let go of a particular sin, or doing something secretly. In that case, the Lord is speaking to you to remove those things from your life permanently.
You cannot live under God’s blessing while remaining under the yoke of sin.
3. Clarify and Pursue Your Dreams
“And God said, ‘Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so” (Genesis 1:9, ESV).
Most people fail to achieve their goals because they lack a clear and concrete understanding of what the Lord has for them. This passage shows how God revealed the dry land, providing a firm and stable foundation to build.
Having a goal or dream doesn’t mean saying, “I want to be blessed this year,” or “I hope to be better,” or “I want God to use me.” These statements are too vague. We often have so many desires that we aim for everything and achieve nothing.
Take time for stillness, prayer, and meditation on the Word. Allow the Holy Spirit to reveal where the Lord wants to take you. This clarity will transform how you pray and work toward your goals.
These are just a few practical principles I know will bless your life. May the Lord bless you and use you mightily in this new year!
