Have you ever asked yourself: “What or who am I living for?”
Many people would quickly respond, “Pastor, of course, we live for the Lord.”
But sadly, in many cases, it’s just words.

We live in a generation that’s deeply marked by selfishness—a society that glorifies self. The world constantly pushes messages that contradict God’s Word, encouraging us to focus solely on our comfort, well-being, and desires. But living for the Lord means dying to self. It means laying down our dreams, ambitions, and personal will so that Christ can grow within us. This is impossible without first confronting the root of selfishness.

That’s why the apostle Paul said, “I die every day” (1 Corinthians 15:31 ESV).
A true Christian does not live for themselves—they live for God. And Jesus set that example for us perfectly.

In this blog, I want to share three simple but powerful principles that have helped me surrender my will and truly live for Jesus.

1. Go to the Foot of the Cross Daily

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
(Galatians 2:20, ESV)

The Cross is the only cure for selfishness. When we look to the Son of God—pure, perfect, and without sin—being punished for our wrongs, it reminds us of what it truly means to surrender everything.

As believers, we must go to the Cross daily. Our human nature constantly seeks its interest, rather than the things of God. Starting your day in prayer, remembering Jesus’ sacrifice, and willingly laying down your emotions, desires, and plans is what it means to go to the Cross.

I once heard a Bible teacher respond to the question, “Which is stronger—the flesh or the Spirit?” His answer was simple: “The one you feed the most.”
When you go to the Cross each day, you’re starving the flesh and strengthening your spiritual sensitivity to hear God’s voice.

The only way to overcome the “self” is to leave it nailed to the Cross—every single day.

2. Commit to Doing God’s Work

One of the best ways to stay centered in God’s will—and not drift back into self-centered living—is by staying actively involved in His work.

I’ve met many believers who have a willing heart for the Lord, but they become disconnected from the mission. Over time, they slowly start living for themselves again.

Doing God’s work means sharing the gospel, making disciples, and being fully engaged in your local church. I honestly don’t think anyone can say they truly live for God if they’re not actively leading others to Him. Evangelism and discipleship were the burning passion of Jesus’ heart.

Living for God isn’t just attending church for a couple of hours on Sunday (and let’s be honest—many now do this from home through a screen). Living for God means going where He sends you, so that His Son may be glorified in every place.

3. Don’t Let the Cares of This World Consume You

“But the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.”
(Mark 4:19, ESV)

We all have needs, challenges, and dreams. But Scripture reminds us that our heavenly Father cares deeply for us.

Many people unintentionally drift into self-centered living because they’re overwhelmed by life’s demands. The enemy whispers, “If you don’t give all your time to work, how will you provide for your family?”

But if you live solely to work, then you’re not living for yourself—or for God—you’re living for the world. If you’ve been feeling burdened or anxious, I invite you to seek God first each morning. Start your day with His Word and let His promises guide your heart.

God is faithful. If you take a step of faith and fully commit to Him, you will see His supernatural provision and guidance in every area of your life.

I’ve been in ministry for many years, and I can say this with all sincerity:
Life is not worth living unless we live it for Christ.

May the peace of the Lord be with you always.
